MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - In an interview with MailOnline, 22-year-old Roza, the youngest of the three explained why they chose to form their group and travel to Iraq. She said, "When we heard ISIS coming to Sinjar and killing women, we came to stop the humanitarian crisis."
Roza also added, "When ISIS came, we saw them take Yazidi females and enslave them."
When the Yazidis had their ethnic cleansing that started in August on Mount Sinjar a year ago, ISIS armed themselves with guns, raided villages and destroyed communities. They also took men, women, and children from their homes. They were forced to stand in two separate lines with the men on one side and the women and children on the other.
The men were asked to renounce their Christianity and pledge their allegiance to Islam. Those who disobeyed would be brought into killing fields and were forced to dig their own graves before being shot in the back of the head.
The women and underage girls were taken to Raqqa and Mosul to be sold as sex slaves. Roza was quoted saying that ISIS did this to the Yazidis to get rid of the men and abuse the women.
Because of the attempted genocide of the Yazidis, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered air strikes against ISIS on August 7. According to one of the female fighters, the action came too late as ISIS already massacred Yazidi in caves in Sinjar on August 3, four days before the airstrikes occurred.
One of the women fighters, experienced commander Deijly, said the Yazidiwere left hopeless after the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and its troops, the Peshmerga, withdrew.
After the Sinjar tragedy occurred, an estimated 40,000 refugees left without enough water supplies. Deijly said that it was a difficult journey from Turkey because of the scorching heat but the female fighters trained for that and continued their journey.
The last member of the group, 26-year-old Raparin, shared what happened to their unit when they have arrived on the battlefield. Raparin recalled, "We were sometimes killing ten of them a day, in the beginning of liberation of Sinjar."
Deijly said they were one with the Yazidi and would fight ISIS to take revenge for what happened to the women. Roza, Deijly and Raparin are all members of the PKK, the Kurdistans Workers Party. Their organization has been fighting the Turkish government for decades. Aside from fighting against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, they also promote gender equality in the Middle East.
