MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - An inspirational story of a Rabbi's aunt went viral after she met the Israel solider she prayed for during the Gaza conflict.
His name was given to her by a Jewish group that offered names of Israeli soldiers in need of prayer. The group also released the names of the soldier's mothers since Jews traditionally pray by naming the person, "son of" or "daughter of" their mothers' name.
The woman, simply called "Betsy," included his name in her daily prayers and eventually got to meet him following a series of coincidences believed to be God's intervention.
During a video message recorded on Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Yoel Gold explained that the inspiring story of his aunt was because of God, who "is behind the events we call coincidence, accidents or chance."
Gold shared the story of his Aunt Betsy and Uncle Simon who recently visited Israel. The pair made an impromptu visit to a restaurant called Meat and Wine Co. outside Tel Aviv - Herzliya and were seated downstairs. They wanted to enjoy the view so they requested to be moved upstairs.
The waiter upstairs gave them their menus and was very pleasant before listing the dinner specials. As the waiter was about to walk away, he turned and called to Betsy, "By the way if you need anything my name is Barak."
Betsy reacted immediately. She shared, "I immediately got some kind of a feeling in me ... I said [to my husband], 'We have to know his mom's name.'"
Her husband asked the waiter if his mother's name was Orna. When the waiter confirmed that it was, Betsy was shocked. "He said it and I didn't process it. It was like, you see these stories that you don't hear what he's saying and you're like 'what?' And that was how I felt," she said.
After composing herself, Betsy asked the waiter, "Did you by any chance fight last summer in the war with Gaza, Operation Protective Edge?"
Barak answered, "Yeah, how did you know?"
"I've got your name on my kitchen cabinet," Betsy informed him.
Rabbi Gold explained Barak was touched to know a woman in California was praying for him during his time in Gaza.
Barak said, "Betsy pray for me to come back home safe, and I came back home safe. When you realize that someone prays for you, it makes the heart very, very warm."
Gold concluded his message by saying:
"We live in a world of 7 billion people and it's hard to imagine that the creator of the universe is looking at little old me. it's hard to believe he's orchestrating every event in our life and sometimes it's hard to feel that when I talk to Him, he's actually listening ... We remind ourselves he is behind the events we call coincidence, accidents, or chance ... Every breath you take is His special way of saying you matter. So reach out to Him and talk to Him. Ask Him for a year of happiness and health or whatever else you might need, because He is waiting to hear from you."
