MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - An Afghan man and woman were filmed being lashed in front of a crowd due to adultery. Each received 100 lashes on Monday in the western province of Ghor.
The man and woman stayed crouching and did not cry out during the brutal ordeal. The strict Sharia Law is still strongly implemented in the regions of the Ghor province and is backed up by the government in Ghor province.
The footage features a woman, wearing a head-to-toe burqa, and a man receiving brutal punishments implemented by the Sharia laws in the area. As the two were punished by a man carrying a leather whip, the predominantly-male crowd watched on.
The sentencing was backed by the government of the Ghor province where the trial for the couple's sin occurred. According to the spokesman of the governor, Seema Jowenda, "They had relations a long time ago but were arrested early this month. Their punishment is based on Sharia law and will teach others a lesson."
The justice ministry was unavailable for comments, but according to the local judge, the penalty was backed by the constitutional and criminal law in the region. The area has been enforcing a strict interpretation of the Sharia law from 1996-2001. However, some Islamic militant groups were already ousted from power by U.S. led coalitions, nearly demolishing this form of punishment.
The foreign-backed government in Afghanistan does not enforce the Sharia law anymore. They even condemn the practices of beatings and stoning, something ISIS is well known for. Still, these horrific punishments continue to occur in areas under insurgents rule.
In earlier reports, five people were arrested after beating a man and his daughter who committed a robbery. A woman died by the hands of a mob in a center in Kabul after being accused of burning the Koran, Islam's holy book. This incident lead to an outrage of demonstrators in the Afghan capital after it was discovered that the woman did not desecrate the text.
