MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - A large group of Muslim men allegedly harassed a delegation of U.S. Congressmen during their visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. According to the report, Representatives Trent Franks, Keith Rothfus and Evan Jenkins were approached by a group of Muslim men after descending the popular historical site.
The men were "surprisingly intolerant and belligerent," according to Rothfus.
Multiple outbursts occurred during the harassment and the police had to break it up several times. One of the outrages were caused by Jenkin's wife, who was touring together with him. She was wearing a long sleeve shirt and calf-length skirt.
This incident began when the Muslim men shouted at Jenkin's wife telling her she needed to cover up more, according to the U.S. delegation. The police had to break up the melee and clear the way for the U.S. delegation group to continue with the visit.
The Muslim men were also reported to have mobilized a larger group of men that attempted to steal materials being used by the delegation's guide. The guide had a map of Israel with him.
A man, notified by the cleaner who noticed the guide's map, asked the guide about the maps and diagrams that he was using. The man even demanded the guide to show him if any of the materials featured the Temple. He told the guide that the term "Temple Mount" was not allowed to be used in the material. The place could be referred to as the "Dome of the Rock," the man continued.
The Temple Mount is a historical site in Jerusalem, Israel that is holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims, but is currently controlled by Jordan and the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf.
Men wearing the Waqf insignia repeatedly interrupted the guide during the delegations' tour and tried to grab his diagrams and maps. The police had to stop the group of men once again after the group began harassing the delegation once more while shouting and pointing at the tour guide.
The congressmen were clearly disappointed with the experience. They initially thought the experience would be "exhilarating and meaningful beyond words."
