MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Originally, it was estimated that 190 members of the Iraqi troop was killed when the extremist group attacked and subjugated Saddam Hussein's hometown. However, crucial satellite imagery identified three new execution areas and tripled the death toll.
The new satellite images, footage of the horrific massacre and upsetting eyewitness accounts have helped convict 24 of ISIS extremists behind the brutality.
An Iraqi court has sentenced the convicted extremists to hang for their participation in the slaughter of hundreds of soldiers last July 8. Four militants were acquitted because of deficiency of evidence. About 604 other militants, who are also suspected to have acted in the massacre, are still at large.
A day after dominating the city at the center of Iraq, ISIS claims it executed 1,700 Shi'ite "members of the army" who were trying to escape the slaughter. All defendants pleaded not guilty and asserted their innocence regarding the massacre and that their prior confessions were forced under torture by Iraqi officers.
It was reported that some of the deceased soldiers' raged in the courtroom and threw shoes and water bottles at the defendants while they were being questioned by the chief judge.
According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW), two trenches were located in a field 100m away from the "Water Palace." However, a newly-released ISIS propaganda video of the execution and the satellite imagery have helped recognize three new execution sites - increasing the death toll from between 285 and 440 to up to 770.
Footage of the execution showed ISIS fighters executing between 25 and 30 men at the second site using handguns.
