LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Showing too much skin, under the sharia law, is strictly prohibited, and punishments have become harsher. This includes breastfeeding in public.
"I did not know what a 'biter was and I thought it is a reduced sentence," explained a 24-year-old mother accosted by the Al-Khansa brigade for breastfeeding her baby in public, according to the anti-ISIS group A-Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently. "I was afraid of whipping, so I choose the 'biter.'"
After being taken to the "Hesba" headquarters' torture chamber in Raqqa, the mother was asked to choose between a whip or the "biter."
"They brought out a sharp object that has a lot of teeth and held me, placing it on my chest and pressing it strongly," stated the mother. "I screamed from pain and I was badly injured. They later took me to the hospital."
The mother, nicknamed Batol to protect her identity, explained that other Syrian woman have endured the same horrific punishment. According to Abu Ibrahim a-Raqawi and Syria Direct, rural women in Syria have been used to breastfeeding in public, "making them vulnerable" to punishment
The "biter" is believed to resemble a "Breast Ripper," held at a torture museum in Germany. "[The device] resembles the type of animal trap that closes on an animal's legs when he touches it," said Ibrahim a-Raqawi to Syria Direct. "The biter is like a jaw, when your press on it sharp teeth emerge."
"I felt then that my femininity has been destroyed completely," stated Batol.
