Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

A new era of freedom and respect may be on the horizon for Bahrain as the King of that country promises reforms. The pledge comes after an internal investigation uncovered widespread evidence of torture and abuse following public demonstrations in that country.

MANAMA, BAHRAIN (Catholic Online) - King Hamad of Bahrain said he was "dismayed" at the findings and promised to ensure "those painful events won't be repeated."

The report looked into how security officials responded to protests that occurred in February and March. A number of protesters were arrested and many said they were tortured both physically and mentally. Among the torture accusations are beatings, whippings, electric shocks, and threats of rape, mostly in efforts to obtain confessions.

The announcement from the King is remarkable. It represents the first time a country in the Middle East has decided to investigate itself and resolve its own issues without international pressure to do so.

Originally, security forces blamed the unrest on Iran, saying the Shia Muslim majority was responding to encouragement from Iran. The ruling family is Sunni Muslim, which is occasionally a source of tension between the government and its people. The report concluded that no clear link between the unrest and Iran was made.

King Hamad also said  that he did not ever want to see the country paralyzed by "intimidation and sabotage."

The King made a promise to reform Bahrain's laws in light of the report. He also promised to dismiss those found guilty of abusing their power.

"We do not want ever again to see civilians tried anywhere but in ordinary courts," the King said.
If the king delivers on his promises of reform, it may prove to be one of the most fruitful and bloodless successes of the Arab Spring movement. King Hamad has an opportunity to set an example for others throughout the region and to ensure the lasting peace and prosperity of his people.
