GAZA (Catholic Online) - Khaled Meshaal was interviewed by the Al Jazeera network this weekend as the violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza escalated to horrible new levels.
He poured more fuel on the growing flames.
Meshal is recognized as a major political leader of the Hamas regime. In the interview he signaled the kind of growing hostility which has fueled the continued escalation.
Meshaal complained that even though Hamas had accepted "all the peaceful options" of the past, they had all been, in his opinion, "without results." He demanded that "the blockade must be lifted and the crossings [from Israel] opened ... notably that in Rafah".
Hamas siezed the Gaza from the forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in June of 2007 leading to the blockade.
The militant Hamas leader called on Palestinians to launch what he called a "new intifada" (uprising) against Israel.
He also called for a resumption of suicide missions and other acts of terror stating, "We called for a military intifada against the enemy. Resistance will continue through suicide missions."
Meshaal lives in exile in Syria and has been a strong voice of opposition to the efforts by the Palestinian President to negotiate with the Jewish State."Neither rockets nor suicide operations are absurd, but negotiations are," he said.
