LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Pope Francis has made it clear that the world is at war. He also made clear he does not think religion has much to do with it.
"It's war, we don't have to be afraid to say this," he told reporters. "a war of interests, for money, resources... I am not speaking of a war of religions. Religions don't want war. The others want war."
Pope Francis was speaking about the motivations of the various actors in the war on terror. The leadership and fighters of the Islamic State want war because it is profitable and ensures their power. Conflict is also a profitable enterprise for other leaders around the world.
Historically, wars were fought to decide outcomes. Every effort was made to shorten their duration because they were costly. However, many nations have perfected the art of low-intensity warfare. That is, fighting that resolves nothing. Such conflict is very profitable for both weapon manufacturers and politicians.
Pope Francis recognizes this. The dominant media narrative is that the conflict is caused by competing religious worldviews. However, it is profit and power, not faith that is driving this perpetual conflict.
Security is very tight around the World Youth Day celebrations. Soldiers and police are out en force, working to protect the Pope and the millions of youth gathered for the celebration.
We are asked to pray for the safety and peace of the Holy Father and the world's youth gathered in Krakow.
