Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

'That puts me in the dilemma that I cannot continue my service down there as a soldier'

22-year old Joanna Palani dropped out of college and made the decision to travel to Iraq to help fight ISIS. When she returned Copenhagen in her home country of Denmark, her passport was confiscated -a decision she plans to appeal.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Joanna Palani made headlines last year when she chose to drop out of college with intentions of fighting ISIS in Kobane, Syria. After joining the ranks of Syrian Kurds, Iraqi Peshmerga troops and a team of US and Arab coalition warplanes, the military forces were able to remove hundreds of ISIS militants from the center of the city.

Palani posted a picture of herself wearing military fatigues, a bulletproof vest and carrying a large assault rifle with a warning to ISIS militants, "See you on the front-line tomorrow."

Kobane is currently under renovations and as it works to rebuild itself, Palani decided to return to Denmark. When she arrived, her passport was confiscated by police and PET, the Danish intelligence service.

Worried about her future as a soldier, she said, "They have forbidden me from leaving Denmark. That puts me in the dilemma that I cannot continue my service down there as a soldier."

She wrote on Facebook that she couldn't understand why Danish officials have decided to punish her under the new "foreign fighter rules" to stop Danes from joining terror groups.

She wrote, "How can I pose a threat to Denmark and other countries by being a soldier in an official army that Denmark trains and supports directly in the fight against the Islamic State?"

Soren Pind, Minister of Justice told Danish national daily newspaper Berlingske that Denmark's foreign fighter law was "very clear" but hinted that Palani could appeal the decision in court.

Palan has already announced her decision to appeal.

In an interview last year, she said, "I love Denmark. I grew up here and I love the freedom of our society. If Denmark should ever be attacked, I will go to the front-line with a Danish flag around my shoulder. But I have Kurdish family, and right now it is the Kurds who are being attacked by brainwashed Islamists."

PET released a statement regarding their concerns: "The conflict  in Syria/Iraq continues to attract people from Denmark but the number is falling. On the other hand, those who have travelled to war zones are remaining there for longer periods, are younger and are overwhelmingly joining the Islamic State."
