span style="line-height: 1.22;">BRUSSELS, EUROPE (Catholic Online) - The Vice President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans explained in a conference on religious intolerance that people have seen the "age-old monster" return in Europe again.  "This is unacceptable. I thought we knew better. I wouldn't have thought it would be possible.but it's happening again."

According to EU's fundamental rights agency, the anti-Semitic stereotyping is a reality seen in a lot of countries, and there are some EU political parties open to being anti-Semitic. Timmermans expressed, "it's a vital question for the future of Europe that our Jewish community feels at ease and completely at home."

Across Europe, there has been a noticeable spike in anti-Semitic incidents. The hate speech and threats thrown, and violent attacks made as a reaction to conflict appears to be an expression of much deeper antisemitism. That has been fueled by a lot of factors growing for more than a decade now.

According to Germany's Central Council of Jews president, Dieter Graumann, these are the worst times since the Nazi era.

"On the streets, you hear things like, 'the Jews should be gassed,' 'the Jews should be burned.' We haven't had that in Germany for decades." Graumann stated. "It's not just a German phenomenon. It's an outbreak of hatred against Jews so intense that it's very clear indeed."

A 2012 survey involving around 6,000 Jew respondents from eight EU countries found that 66 percent of respondents felt antisemitism in Europe was on the rise, while 76 percent said antisemitism had increased in their country over the last five years.
