Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

Hungary has closed its border to refugees after it has finsihed its 100-mile razor wired fence. Authorities declared a state of emergency as the main gateway to Europe was shut down, according to the Washington Post.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Thousands of Syrian and Iraqi people have been rushing to Europe before the borders became more controlled. Almost 10,000 refugees entered Hungary on Monday alone, making this the new single-day record.
"We just want to pass through their country," said Amir Kirit, 25, software engineer from Damascus, according to the Washington Post. "There is no going back now. We took the most dangerous trip in the word to get here because in Syria, there is just death. So we will die here if we have to. Women, children. We need the international community to help."
After the border shutdown, a tent city sprouted across the lines in Serbia. Men, women and children spent the night curled up awaiting the next move.
Hungarian police detained 60 people the day it closed its border, while aid workers prepared themselves for what could become a crisis as food and shelter runs low.
"I'm really down. If we can't get to Germany, I have no hope. The dream is off," said Bilal Rahmani, 18, noting that he and his family travelled the distance without knowing the border would be closed upon arrival 20 minutes after the shutdown.
Although Germany is leading a plan to resettle up to 160,000 more refugees across Europe, come countries are fighting against the plan. Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban hired 860 new border police to fight off those illegally trying to cross their strict border.
Although many migrants are waiting for word on travel to Germany being back up, even the open and generous country is experiencing a strain in limits on resources.
"Germany is strong and can do a lot," German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in an open letter to supporters, according to the Washington Post. "Nevertheless, in recent days we have seen that despite the best intentions, our reception capabilities have reached their limits, above all when it comes to the speed of the influx of refugees."
