MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The Lively and historic city centre of Rome got the surprise of a lifetime after seeing Pope Francis emerge from an optician store last week. The Pontiff had his glasses fixed and was mobbed by fans when he attempted to leave.
He later decided to have his current pair fixed instead of purchasing new frames and paid the full price despite the offer of a papal discount.
The store is located near the famous Piazza del Popolo in a city centre that is always full. The Pontiff's visit was not unnoticed and a large crowd gathered outside the tiny glasses shop.
The shop's owner, Alessandro Spieza, admitted he made the Pope's glasses last year and the Pontiff liked them so much he was asked to refill the prescription this year, so he replaced the lenses in the existing frames.
After Pope Francis left, Spieza said, "I was supposed to go to the Vatican yesterday to bring them, but the pope told his secretary, 'No, I don't want Spieza to come here, I'll go to Via del Babuino.'"
A video surfaced featuring the Pope trying on the new glasses, together with Spieza and assistant.
At the conclusion of the replacement lenses, the Pope left to return to the Vatican, but was met by an enormous crowd. One person even managed to tug the Pontiff's arm, while several people attempted to capture him with their camera phones.
Daily Mail reported Pope Francis admits he misses being able to come and go as he pleases. He was known to ride public transportation in Buenos Aires during his days as archbishop.
