LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - While the center-left-made up of what in the U.S. would be liberals, socialists and communists-holds the government in Sweden, it is a minority, and does not have the ability to force through its 2015 budget plans on its own.
Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.
The real issue is that Sweden's far-right, anti-immigration Democrat party, which holds the majority in the country's parliament, said it would vote against the deal, and instead vote in favor of a budget that is backed by a coalition bloc of Sweden's center-right.
Even if the center-left can rally the votes of its supporters, it will still lack a majority in parliament.
"There is an option to try again, there is an option to resign, and there is an option to call new elections," said Sweden's prime minister, Stefan Lofven.
Talks between the two ideological sides have faltered, the Sweden Democrats want to cut the allowed number of immigrants seeking asylum by 90%, something the center-left finds unacceptable.
"There is no one on the other side of the table, it is meaningless to hold talks," Lofven said. "We may call snap elections later, when the constitution allows. We could also resign and there are other alternatives."
The center-right coalition is made up of Sweden's Moderate, Center, Christian Democrat and Liberal parties said they will vote for their own budget during the December 12 vote.
The ruling coalition of Social Democrats and the Green Party are also not expected to budge.
Leader for the Sweden Democrats, Mattias Karlsson, said that the center-right coalition is intending to force the left-leaning government to reverse its incredibly generous immigration laws.
Those who seek asylum in Sweden have free housing, language lessons and welfare allowances, which add up to 1.5% of Sweden's 2013 budget. Sweden is now the largest recipient of asylum seekers and refugees per-capita.
The greater issue behind this is a fatigue over leftist policies which have proven bankrupt. Sweden has long been considered a socialist success story, however recent developments suggest everything is not as it seems. Increasing frustration with leftist ideology in control of government is spreading and was most recently on display in the November election in the United States. Analysts warn that a growing rejection of the left in countries across Europe could lead to a significant increase in public turmoil.
