BERLIN, GERMANY (Catholic Online) - Pope Benedict said, "We are witnessing a growing indifference to religion in society, which considers the issue of truth as something of an obstacle in its decision-making, and instead gives priority to utilitarian considerations... Religion is one of these foundations for a successful social life."

Germans are struggling with the Catholic Church and church membership. According to the German Bishop's Conference, tens of thousands of people have left the church this year alone. Critics of the church cite its disapproval of homosexuality, and the limited roles of women as reasons for its growing unpopularity.

Defenders of the faith point out that the church is merely keeping the law of God as given to all.

There are other problems for the German church. Recent sex-abuse scandals have cast some church officials in a poor light, although the church shows every sign of aggressively pursuing investigations alongside civil authorities. The Pope is expected to meet privately with some of the abuse victims during the course of his visit.

Pope Benedict XVI also addressed the German parliament and discussed the lessons of World War II. In calling politicians to task, he said, "To serve right and to fight against the dominion of wrong is and remains the fundamental task of the politician."

Ultimately, the Pope's warning is a warning to those who would expect the church to conform to the thinking of the modern age. The word of God is timeless, as is the creator, and no modern twist on morals, or apathy, can shake the foundation of either. The lesson is powerfully simple: It is man's responsibility to conform--not God's.
