Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. Embryonic Genocide: Thousands of Human Embryonic Persons Killed in the U.K.

Over 30 embryos are created for every successful IVF implantation in a woman.

In addition to the fact that In Vitro Fertilization separates the marital embrace from the reproductive miracle - turning the begetting of children into manufacturing - IVF also results in the killing of these human embryonic persons at a scale which constitutes embryonic genocide.Lord Alton, who requested the figures, said: "We are creating and destroying human embryos on an industrial scale."

P>LONDON, England (Catholic Online) - On November 9, 1978, Karol Cardinal Wotyla, now Blessed John Paul II, spoke these words to the Catholic Bishops of the United States:

"We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of the American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel and the anti-Gospel. This confrontation lies within the plans of divine providence. It is a trial which the whole Church. must take up."

At the root of most issues which threaten the United States as a free society is her failure to recognize the inherent dignity of every human life from conception till natural death. Even the current economic crisis flows from a moral crisis, a crisis of values. In the words of another prophetic voice of the last century, the late Aleksander Solzhenitsyn, recorded in his now famous Templeton address of 1983, "Men have forgotten God."

Our dignity as human persons derives from the fact that we are created in God's Image. When we fail to recognize this truth we treat one another as objects, mere property to be used and abused. This dehumanizes us and leads to our loss of true freedom. Human persons become commodities to be used rather than gifts to be received.

Finally, in the words of another prophetic voice of the twentieth century, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - a man who believed in the existence of the Natural Law and warned of "a philosophy that deifies man by affirming humanity is God" - we are reaping the bad fruit of what he called a "man centered foolishness". In his commentary on the biblical story of the rich young man found in "Strength to Love"  - the  story which produces the backdrop of Blessed John Paul's extraordinary Magna Carta of the moral life, "The Splendor of Truth" - Dr. King observed,

"Jesus called the rich man a fool because he failed to recognize his dependence on God. He talked as though he unfolded the seasons and provided the fertility of the soil, controlled the rising and the setting of the sun, and regulated the natural processes that produce the rain and the dew. He had an unconscious feeling the he was the Creator, not the creature."

We were all once human embryonic persons. We all lived in the first home of the whole human race, our mother's womb. For the Christian, we further profess that the Son of God, the Incarnate Word, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, was a human being, who, in the embryonic stage, lived in his mother's womb.

At every age and stage of our "human-being- ness", be it in the womb, as an infant, as a child, an adolescent, an adult, in our times of illness, in our old age, we have always been dependent on others and vulnerable. This is what it means to be a human being. The emphasis of the proponents of the culture of death on independence and autonomy informs a worldview that Pope John Paul II taught threatens the ".entire structure of human rights." (Gospel of Life, Par. 19)

When we question the taking of innocent human life in the womb for convenience we are accused of opposing "choice" and being against what calls itself "progress". When we tell the truth concerning what happens in what are called "reproductive technologies" such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) we are called "anti-science". What we are is Pro-life. We  insist that science exists to serve the person, the family and the common good. Science, after all, can become a force for evil and our common history has shown how that can occur when the human heart and capacity for making the right choice has been corrupted.

On Monday, March 9, 2009, President Barrack Obama removed all restraints from extracting stem cells from human embryonic life for experimentation. Make no mistake; every "extraction" of embryonic stem cells kills a living human embryonic person. Research has demonstrated that adult stem cells, which can be extracted with the consent of the donor and do not kill, have produced great promise and results while embryonic stem cell research has produced nothing. However, with the stroke of a Presidential pen human embryonic persons became property, capable of being "manufactured" like a commodity and used as spare parts in experimentation.

In 1987, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Holy See issued its important teaching entitled Instruction on the Respect for Human Life in its origin and on the Dignity of Procreation"  Among the many questions it answered with absolute moral clarity was: "What Respect is due to the human embryo, taking into account his nature and identity?" The answer given by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church: "The human being must be respected - as a person - from the very first instant of his (her) existence."

We must simply get used to the indignities of being verbally pilloried, accused of being anti-science" and "impeding progress". We must speak for human embryonic Life as we speak for all human life. We must expose and oppose this new genetic slavery wherein an entire class of human persons is being labeled as property to be used by those who are more powerful.

The idea that people can be less than persons is now applied to other stages of human development outside of the womb. The disabled (physically and mentally), the aged and the infirmed are increasingly denied the protection of the law. There is an emphasis on individual rights over relation and autonomy over solidarity.

Blessed John Paul II wrote in "The Gospel of Life" of a "remarkable contradiction.the roots of the contradiction between the solemn affirmation of human rights and their tragic denial in practice lies in a notion of freedom which exalts the isolated individual in an absolute way, and gives no place to solidarity, to openness to others and service of them."(Par. 19)

Now to a story out of the United Kingdom which rips the smiley face off of what happens in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and unveils the scale of human destruction it brings along with it. The Christian Telegraph reports "Hundreds of thousands of human embryos discarded"

"The scale of wasted human embryos as a result of IVF treatment has been revealed after a written reply was given to a question asked in the House of Lords, reports "Christian Concern for our Nation". Department of Health figures show that over 30 embryos are created for every successful IVF implantation in a woman.

"3 million embryos have been created for IVF purposes since 1991 when the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act made the practice legal. Of these, fewer than 100,000 have been successfully implanted and resulted in live births, nearly a million and a half have been discarded, around three quarters of a million have been frozen for later use and 100,000 were given for use in experiments where the embryos were destroyed.

"Lord Alton, who requested the figures, said: "We are creating and destroying human embryos on an industrial scale." He went on to point out the folly of spending huge amounts of money on a process with such a small success rate (15 per cent) at a time when there are over 600 abortions a day and only 70 babies put up for adoption annually. A single cycle of IVF treatment costs around Ł4,000 and the cost is sometimes met by the NHS.

"Josephine Quintavalle, from the campaign group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said: "Human life begins at the point of conception. It should not be created as a surplus in such a careless way." Commenting on the news, Andrea Williams said: "These figures are deeply distressing. The cost of IVF treatment is not just expensive financially but is also costing many human lives. The extremely low success rate of this treatment should cause us to ask whether this great cost is really worth it.The desire for a child is good and honourable but we have to question whether this is really the best way of fulfilling that desire."

In addition to the fact In Vitro Fertilization separates the marital embrace from the reproductive miracle - turning the begetting of children into manufacturing - IVF also results in the killing of these human embryonic persons at a scale which constitutes embryonic genocide. On June 20, 2008 the Vatican released "the Dignity of the Human Person" which dealt with "Certain Bioethical Questions". In the section concerning the deliberate destruction of embryos we read:

"The fact that the process of in vitro fertilization very frequently involves the deliberate destruction of embryos was already noted in the Instruction Donum Vitae (The Gift of Life). There were some who maintained that this was due to techniques which were still somewhat imperfect. Subsequent experience has shown, however, that all techniques of in vitro fertilization proceed as if the human embryo were simply a mass of cells to be used, selected and discarded.

"It is true that approximately a third of women who have recourse to artificial procreation succeed in having a baby. It should be recognized, however, that given the proportion between the total number of embryos produced and those eventually born, the number of embryos sacrificed is extremely high.  These losses are accepted by the practitioners of in vitro fertilization as the price to be paid for positive results. In reality, it is deeply disturbing that research in this area aims principally at obtaining better results in terms of the percentage of babies born to women who begin the process, but does not manifest a concrete interest in the right to life of each individual embryo.

"It is often objected that the loss of embryos is, in the majority of cases, unintentional or that it happens truly against the will of the parents and physicians. They say that it is a question of risks which are not all that different from those in natural procreation; to seek to generate new life without running any risks would in practice mean doing nothing to transmit it. It is true that not all the losses of embryos in the process of in vitro fertilization have the same relationship to the will of those involved in the procedure.

"But it is also true that in many cases the abandonment, destruction and loss of embryos are foreseen and willed. Embryos produced in vitro which have defects are directly discarded. Cases are becoming ever more prevalent in which couples who have no fertility problems are using artificial means of procreation in order to engage in genetic selection of their offspring."

This story out of the United Kingdom only scratches the surface of the numbers involved in the human embryonic genocide in which we are engaged.  Of course, the children born after the IVF process is completed are gifts, as are all human persons. And, in many cases, the parents had no idea of what was involved in the process because, like many of the so called "reproductive health" procedures, it is hidden in a web of lies. However, the truth remains and it must be told. Only the truth will set us free.
