P>REYKJAVIK, Iceland (LifeSiteNew.com) - Iceland's general assembly voted June 11 to legalize same-sex "marriage," making Iceland the 9th country in the world to do so.

Iceland is the only nation with an openly homosexual head of government, Johanna Siguroardottir.

The law passed Iceland's Althingi 49-0, with 14 members abstaining. It takes effect on June 27.

In addition to legalizing same-sex "marriage," the law will also end the system of registered partnerships previously available to homosexuals in Iceland.

Henceforth, registered unions between homosexuals will only be recognized as "marriage," making homosexual and heterosexual unions absolutely equal in the eyes of the law.

Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Belgium, Sweden, Portugal, and Norway have also legalized homosexual "marriage."

The new law states that religious ministers will be free to perform gay "marriage" ceremonies but will not be obliged to do so.
