Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - The very reliable Web Log information source, "Rorate Caeli" has a very successful track record breaking stories concerning the traditionalist community.
It has posted extraordinary news this evening.
Rorate Caeli has reported for several days that the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is set to remove the excommunication incurred as a result of the action of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer who consecrated four Bishops of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX / SSPX) in Ecône, Switzerland, on June 30, 1988 without approval.
Now it claims to have confirmation of the rumor as fact from highly reliable European sources.
The four Bishops consecrated were Bernard Fellay, Alfonso de Gallarreta, [Bernard] Tissier de Mallerais, and Richard Williamson. The excommunication also applied to Archbishop Lefebvre and his co-consecrator, Brazilian Bishop [Antonio] de Castro Mayer.
This would be extraordinary news and could have significant implications, particularly within the traditionalist community. Is the rumor true? How will the reconciliation be accomplished? What form would the relationship take with the SSPX? Will they be granted a "Personal prelature" as some have suggested? Will their presence in the full communion of the Church help to expedite the growing movement toward a "reform of the reform" in the Sacred Liturgy?
