LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - A couple who live in the Philippines says they have killed over 800 drug dealers and users as part of that country's war on drugs. The husband and wife form part of a hit team that is sent to deal with people that the local police chief cannot handle.
The police call the gang and just provide basic information, such as the name of the victim. No questions are asked. Everybody uses a disguise. The husband and wife work together to get close to their target. When the chance appears, they shoot their unsuspecting victim and leave a card at the scene branding the victim as a "pusher" or some other drug criminal. The card proves they carried out the hit. They are paid $100 per killing.
The assassins are known as "Ace" and "Sheila" and Ace says he cannot get any other kind of work. Sheila is afraid to quit, lest she be killed herself to protect the gang's secret. Her gang has killed over 800 drug offenders, all at police request.
Nationwide, over 4,000 people have lost their lives in extrajudicial killings which have seen ordinary civilians become deadly assassins. The killings are being carried out in the name of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has been nicknamed "the Punisher."
The killings are extra-judicial, meaning the victims do not receive any protection from the law. There are no charges, no trials, only sentences.
According to Ace, once they get their call, they try to carry out the killing within three days. They locate their victim and work to get close. If they have to, Sheila will act like a dancer in a bar, if their target likes to drink.
As soon as they find a chance, they shoot their victims dead. 7*634;) ;89.05(
Ace and Sheila say they feel guilty about their work, but at $100 per hit it provides the money they need to feed their family.
Outcry over these killings has been intense. The Catholic Church has condemned them. The international community has heavily criticized President Duterte for encouraging tough justice.
However, Duterte enjoys an approval rating over 80 percent. Many people say the drug problem is out of control and drug pushers have been compared to ruthless invaders that are being repelled with the only force they understand.
Some Filipino people support what is happening, others do not. However, the issue remains one for the Filipino people themselves to resolve. They are the ones who must live with the drugs and the violence, so if the consequences are theirs alone, then so too is the right to decide how to address the problem.
