LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Duterte was sworn into the presidency June 30th and already over 110 accused drug dealers were killed by police and vigilante groups, according to Philippine Inquirer.
The latest murder to make headlines is the gruesome killing of a man labeled a drug pusher.
His body was discovered in Manila with the head entirely wrapped in tape and a message scrawled on a piece of cardboard pinned to his chest, reading "I am a pusher."
According to USA Today, Human rights lawyer Jose Manuel Diokno, the national chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group, dubbed the vigilante and police officer-run killing spree "a nuclear explosion of violence."
He wrote a blog for the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and asked: "Do we really want to give the man with the gun the power to judge who are criminals and to kill them? To decide who is bad and who is good, who deserves to live and who deserves to die?"
The killing spree has also drawn attention and condemnation from international rights groups, many of which agree Duterte's call to arms is inexcusable.
Phelim Kine, Human Rights Watch's Asia deputy director stated: "Human Rights Watch is concerned that President Duterte's electoral platform, which included repeated promises to kill those deemed to be criminals and drug dealers, may be interpreted by some as a legitimization of the unlawful concept of extrajudicial killings as an acceptable approach to crime control.
"Not only does each case need to be investigated, but it's crucial there be an inquiry into the surge in killings since June 30 and action taken to put an end to it."
Meanwhile, Duterte, known as "The Punisher" and "Duterte Harry," seems to have no regrets.
When he was elected the Philippines' next President, he explicitly supported the murder of any drug dealers or users: "Please feel free to call the police, or do it yourself if you have the gun, you have my support. You can kill him. Shoot him and I'll give you a medal."
Less than one week after stepping into the presidency, Duterte publicly named five high-ranking police officials allegedly tied to the drug trade and ordered them to be removed from their positions.
He then named three major drug traffickers, each of whom was a Chinese national, in a televised speech and warned they would be executed if they refused to leave the drug trade.
Two of the Chinese nationals are in prison and are believed to be operating their drug trades from behind bars and the third was out of the country. Duturte warned him never to return to the Philippines.
"The moment he steps off the plane, he will die," Duterte coldly stated.
While the Philippines struggles with their mobster-like President, more and more drug-related murders have been occurring.
The question, of course, is not whether the victims were in fact linked to their alleged crimes, but is whether any citizen or officer should be allowed to take life without consequence.
