LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to ABC, Childs was left drifting in the water around noon.
"We took a while to anchor up ... which left us [with] several people in different states of readiness. I was one of the first to hop in [to the water]. It was then 15 minutes before the last people hopped in ... in which time we were fighting the current the whole way.
"Then we started to descend down the line. One person was up the top, so I went to swap hands and I missed the rope ... so I surfaced alongside to the boat. There was no tagline out the back for me to grab on to ... by the time the skipper had thrown it out I was already past it."
Childs drifted alone in the sea for several hours and attempted to hail one of the many search planes but none spotted his drifting form.
When the sun began to set, Childs' hope of rescue faded.
Several planes and boats were deployed to find the missing diver but when each failed to spot him, Childs decided it was time to record a video.
"So that's it," he said into the camera. "The sun goes down they won't do nothing. That's a wrap on old Jakey."
The sun set and Childs prepared to stay afloat until morning, his hope of rescue little more than splintered faith straining against the odds.
Then a plane spotted him.
It was shortly after the sun set when a search plane spotted and rescued him.
"It's a long time to spend by yourself," Childs explained. "Then apparently there were a lot of boats out there but I didn't see any of those ... all I had seen and heard was a trawler which I tried swimming towards.
"It was nice and warm in my wetsuit ... I wasn't overly tired as I was floating. I just wanted a drink of water and a cup of tea."
Sergeant Rob Jorna, the leading search officer, said Childs' experience at sea helped the plane locate him.
"He knew what to do, and his level-headedness at the time, [sic] and he didn't panic and he did all the right things, and activated his safety equipment which alerted the air observer," Jorna explained.
Though he risked drowning, Childs said he wasn't too worried about spending the night at sea.
"I think it's just one of those things. ...if you've got to do it, you've got to do it," he stated. "I'll be in the water tomorrow, probably."
