LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The North Korean freighter, which was covered by harsher U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang over it's nuclear program, saw its crew deported, NBC News reported.
CNN reported the freighter, the Jin Teng, was impounded after North Korea ignored calls to stop its recent nuclear tests and missile launch.
The U.N. Security Council voted to impose new sanctions in response to North Korea's "flagrant disregard" of previous sanctions.
Of the several provisions, Resolution 2270 requires all other countries to "inspect cargo within or transiting through their territory - including airports, sea ports and free trade zones - that was destined for or originating from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
To be mindful of an "evasion of sanctions" was also noted in the resolution.
The United Nations listed the Jin Teng as one of 31 vessels as "subject to the asset freeze."
Jin Teng arrived to Subic Bay, the west side of the the Philippines' island of Luzon, from Indonesia with palm kernals on Thursday. The cargo was unloaded into trucks at the port.
Philippines Coast Guard spokesman Armand Balilo reported the coast guardsmen discovered minor safety violations, such as the lack of fire hoses, corroded air vents, inadequate accommodation for the crew and faulty emergency light bulbs.
Despite losing one of its ships, North Korea continues to escalate its threat of deploying a nuclear weapon.
Kim Jong Un announced, "Under the extreme situation that the U.S. Imperialist is misusing its military influence and is pressuring other countries and people to start war and catastrophe, the only way for our people to protect sovereignty and rights to live is to strengthen the quality and quantity of nuclear power and realize the balance of power."
Philip Yun, the executive director of the Ploughshares Fund, a group against nuclear arms, believes Un is spouting hot air.
"To me, right now, it's a lot of bluster. For them to deliver on a threat, they have to have intent and they have to have capability. And quite frankly, I don't think they have both."
