LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Blaine Alan Gibson, a plane enthusiast, discovered the debris on a sandbank in the Mozambique channel.
Gibson had been searching for any clues to shed some insight to what happened to Beijing's missing flight MH370 when he happened upon the piece.
The triangular piece has since been shipped to Australia for examination by international specialists and officials from Malaysia.Gibson, who has been keeping a blog throughout his worldwide search for MH370, told NBC he discovered the piece on a remote sandbar.
"I decided to take a day and go somewhere, go beachcombing, sure I had the thought of maybe getting very lucky and finding something that was from the plane, but it was also an interesting excursion."
Though he admitted he didn't want to "make any judgement" about the piece and whether it originated from MH370, he did observe "It is part of an aircraft," adding, "that's pretty clear, it's part of a big aircraft [but] my personal opinion and thoughts on it are not what matter. What matters is what the experts say when they investigate it."
Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester released a statement, in which he said, "The location of the debris is consistent with drift modelling commissioned by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and reaffirms the search area for MH370."Chester later stated the object was "of interest to us," but it was "way too early" to claim it belongs to MH370.
The discovery was in the same part of the Indian Ocean where the only confirmed MH370 piece was discovered last summer.
Meanwhile, Voice370, a group of friends and family who lost loved ones on the MH370 Airliner, was inspired and filled with hope after the discovery was made public and has called for a greater search effort.
"We urge states with assets in the East Coast of Africa to support such an effort. We also seek support from naval powers to supply search assets that allow searches closer to uninhabited or swampy portions of the coast [to] be searched effectively."
Since the day MH370 was reported missing, Voice370 believed a range of conspiracy theories in their grief. Should this discovery bring authorities once step closer to uncovering the missing plane's location, Voice370 can finally rest easy.
