The number of passangers killed continues to grow, as the search for survivors goes on.

26 people are reported dead after a TransAsia Airways airplane crashes into the Keelung River. Following its takeoff from the Taiwanese capital Taipei, the plane clipped its wing on a bridge.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The terrifying crash, that leaves 17 people missing, was caught in dashcam footage from a vehicle on the bridge.

"The plane banked sharply to its left after taking off, just missing apartment buildings," according to Taiwan's TVBS news and USA Today. "Its left wing clipped the side of the highway. A taxi on the bridge was hit as the plane crashed into the river, injuring the driver."

As fear for the missing passenger grows, a massive crane hoisted the ATR 72-600 propjet out of the river after the known survivors were brought to safety.

"At the moment, things don't look too optimistic," Wu Jun-Hong, a Taipei Fire Department official told reporters at the scene. "Those in the front of the plane are likely to have lost their lives."

According to CNN, "Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration said the plane was less than a year old and had last completed a safety check on January 26. The agency did not offer any information on what may have caused the crash."

An older TransAsia ATR 72 crashed last year in July, resulting in 48 deaths.

The latest airplane crash adds to the "number of plane tragedies involving Asian carriers."

Other Asian plane tragedies include, AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crashing in December 2014 with 162 people on board. In July 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 killed 298 passengers after being shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Possibly the most notorious Asian plane crash is "the biggest recent mystery" of "the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. It disappeared on March 8, 2014, and has not been found," stated CNN.

TransAsia's ATR 72-600 lost contact with the airline a few minutes after taking off, claimed TransAsia director Peter Chen. Weather conditions did not play a part in the crash; the cause of this tragedy is still unknown.

All other ATR 72's are grounded and await further inspection.
