LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Many claim pro-life groups are hypocritical as they are more concerned for the unborn than they are for those who are homeless, children, the elderly and the needy.
This is not true.
As seen by several pro-life organizations, churches and religious groups, there are thousands of humanitarian aid opportunities to help those society casts aside, chooses to ignore or are in other, poorer, countries.
Pope Francis has long called us to care for those on the fringes of society and each year, billions of dollars are raised and sent to help those in need.
Many are also willing to help a person in need in small but simple ways each and every day.
Feeding a homeless woman, purchasing clothing for children from low income families, sending aid to starving children in Africa and investing in safe water filters for third world countries are all pro-life activities.
Even raising awareness through events like marches or large-scale meetings are pro-life, so when The March for Life in Lima, Peru this weekend quickly morphed into a Solidarity March, no one was surprised.
March participants gathered several tons of food and nearly 4,000 gallons of water to help those who lost their homes during the ongoing flooding in the country.
The ongoing flooding has damaged several private and public structures.
Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima took to his Saturday radio program "Dialogue of Faith" to report: "The March for Life, faithful to its commitment to life, today becomes a Solidarity March with all the victims, because the Church must live with a beating heart, not just with prayer and the sacraments, but also with love for our neighbor with works of charity."
The flooding has led to 85 confirmed deaths and over 111,000 citizens suffer lost or damaged property.
Many have fled their homes and are in desperate need of aid.
Cardinal Capriani was aware of the need and decided to cancel the March for Life, choosing instead to replace it with a collection drive for victims of the weather.
According to the Archdiocese of Lima, over 3,000 volunteers spanning over 100 parishes in the Peruvian capital joined the march and donated what they could.
Father Luis Gaspar, a representative of the Archdiocese of Lima, thanked the "thousands of Peruvians who today marched not only for the lives of the unborn children, but brought aid for our brothers in need. We are the largest march in Peru and today it was up to us to shoulder our responsibility.
"Over the next few days, we will get organized to bring all this aid to the different places in Peru where it is needed."
