´Like the End of the World´: Magnitude 8.8 Quake Shakes Chile. Tsunami Unleashed.

SANTIAGO, Chile (Catholic online) - "Never in my life have I experienced a quake like this, it's like the end of the world," said one frightened man who spoke to a reporter in the City of Temuco. President-elect Sebastian Pinera said more than 147 people died in the strongest earthquake to hit the country in 50 years and one of the strongest ever measured anywhere.

"Unfortunately, Chile is a country of catastrophes," Pinera said, adding the quake heavily damaged many of the country's roads, airports and ports.The magnitude of this monster earthquake measured 8.8 and the aftershocks continue. One of the aftershocks reached a magnitude of 6.9 and the aftershocks. So far there have been 23 aftershocks and they are still occurring.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET). The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles to the east.

At least 23 aftershocks were reported, including one registering at 6.9 on the Richter scale.

This is the most devastating earthquake in the nation´s history.

The worst of the devastation unleashed by this quake may not yet be over. The quake has set off a Tsunami which is threatening all of the nations in the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii, South America, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and the Pacific Islands.

The killer quake in Chile has claimed the lives of at least 147 people so far. The death toll rises by the hour as the devastation becomes clearer. It occurred early Saturday morning, February 27, 2010.
