ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - During the 1990s Algeria used to suffer with an increasing threat from Islamists during the holy month. Armed groups used to attack when roads were suddenly full of traffic and people strolled along the pavements during the night, after the breaking of the Ramadan fast. Hundreds of people have lost their lives while they were on the street appreciating the delight of the night.
"Al hamdou li Allah (God thanks) the security situation has improved significantly thanks to the mobilization of the security services having succeeded to prevent terrorist attacks from being perpetrated" told Ali an Algiers based student.
For their strong strategy to be successfully carried out, Algerian policy makers decided to set military roadblocks on important roads that give access to the main cities. Police brigades have significantly been intensified to ensure the safety of the citizens who come out at night.
During this holy month, the nightlife is full. The streets of the big cities and the small towns throughout the North African nation are full of a happy, animated crowd. The end of the fasting month of Ramadan is set for Friday July 17 2015, causing security to be reinforced in the whole country.
It is toward the end of the holiday that the Islamist armed groups act and commit their heinous crimes to notify their presence. This year the mobilization is perceptible everywhere, even in remote areas. Instructions for vigilance was given to the common people in order to not fall in the ease of everyday life. Public squares and markets remain under strict surveillance.
