ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - The city's population continues to suffer under the Islamist group's draconian rules, and the International Committee of the Red Cross is alarmed by the spiraling humanitarian situation.
Please join Pope Francis in a day of prayer to end the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and around the world.
People have been fleeing the fighting between the Nigerian army and Boko Haram in Diffa, and since February 6 there are several communities in Diffa that continue to be terrified by the ongoing violence in their city, which has killed hundreds and displaced thousands more.
The Red Cross compiled a report on the situation in Niger and concluded that "the humanitarian situation is very worrying". Complicating matters is the fact that many of the Boko Haram fighters in Diffa actually have come from Niger.
February is a month for love and devotion.
"They know the region where they operate as well the weaknesses of the country's security services. So they can be very dangerous to our country" one local journalist said.
Those in Diffa have been forced to abandon everything they owned to avoid the fighting and now many live in total poverty without adequate food, water, medicine or sanitation.
