Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A suicide bomber disguised as a student detonated himself during a school assembly at the Government Science Secondary School in the town of Potiskum, killing or wounding nearly 80 students, police reported.

Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.

Nearly 2,000 students were packed into the assembly hall for the weekly gathering.

Boko Haram is notorious for its anti-West and anti-education stances, and it seeks to prevent children-especially girls-from going to school. The group intends to create an Islamic State in Nigeria, and believes that people should only receive an Islamic education.

The insurgency has killed thousands, displacing hundreds of thousands, and has caused a great deal of anger towards the government and military, which many Nigerians believe lack the ability or will to protect them.

Just this month Boko Haram struck twice. A suicide in the same city killed 30 people in early November, and gunmen attacked a religious procession carried out by moderate Muslims.

Yobe state's governor has shut all public schools around Potiskum and harshly criticized the Nigerian government for not tacking more decisive action against the group.

"Urgent action must be taken right now to restore a fast-waning public confidence by doing whatever it takes to stop the escalating violence," Yobe state's governor, Ibrahim Gaidam said.
