Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to Reuters, the boat was operated by Dutch nonprofit Women on Waves (WoW). WoW provides free abortions at sea for women up to 10-weeks gestation.

In Guatemala, abortions are illegal unless the mother's life is at risk, so WoW picks up women and takes them out to sea, outside the borders of the country.

The organization gives women an abortion pill and keeps them at sea, under observation, until they are well enough to return to shore.

Officials reported many of the crew lied when they applied for tourist visas and were not allowed to work in Guatemala.

La Presna Libre newspaper reported four U.S. citizen crew members were expelled from the country immediately, though WoW's lawyers attempted to appeal the decision immediately.

The Guatemalan army stated they would defend "human life and the laws of our country" by shutting down WoW's actions with their country's women.

WoW claimed to have provided over 60,000 illegal abortions annually to Guatemala's desperate impoverished women and claim they offer a service while. Meanwhile, they ignore the thousands of deaths they are responsible for.

Guatemala's Catholic Church is disgusted by WoW and joined politicians and other religious leaders to protest the boat's presence.

Marleny Arias, a 50-year-old Guatemalan and pro-life advocate, was infuriated at WoW's audacity. She told reporters: "It's a sin. Why don't you go to Holland and kill children over there? Go to Holland. Why come to Guatemala? We are already cursed enough in Guatemala, we don't need more."

Quetzali Cerezo, the director of Women in Equity in Guatemala - and helps support WoW - claimed, "Guatemala has been chosen because the laws are very restrictive on the subject of abortion."

The ship was placed in military custody, allegedly with seven crew members still on board. There is currently no news on when the ship or its crew will be released.
