LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - As Abigail laid on the hospital bed, seemingly dead, the doctors began discussing the potential of harvesting her organs. However, in a moment described as "a miracle on its own" by Abigail's mother, Vicki Kopf, Abigail squeezed her mother's hand.
"My daughter is not dead," a tearful Vicki said Monday, remembering the "breathtaking" event, according to station WWMT. "She is alive and she is fighting for her life. I want everybody to understand that."
Initial reports of the mass shooting listed Abigail as one of the victims, along with six other people. Abigail sat in the front passenger seat of a vehicle parked outside a restaurant when Dalton allegedly opened fire.
Mary Jo Nye, 60, Mary Lou Nye, 63, Barbara Hawthorne, 68, and Dorothy, 70, were all in the vehicle with Abigail, but the teenager remains the only survivor of the group.
"Abigail is strong and she is a vibrant, beautiful, young lady. And she did not deserve this. And neither did her grandmother or those other victims," expressed Vicki, describing Hawthorne as Abigail's "adopted grandmother."
According to Abigail's doctor, Lane-Davies, the young teen was never declared mentally brain dead and they are encouraged by her stability and responsiveness.
Forty-five-year-old Dalton is charged with six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. His other victims include, Rich Smith, 53, and his son Tyler Smith, 17 who both lost their lives and Tiana Carruthers, 25, who was shot multiple times, but survived.
