'Can someone say GLOWING...Safyre got mail today.'

Five-year-old Safyre Terry and her family were arson victims. Unfortunately, Safyre was the only survivor. Now, two years later, Safyre has requested holiday cards for Christmas.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Two years ago, Safyre and her family were trapped in a house fire. Her father, 32-year-old David, three-year-old sister Laya, 2-year-old brother Michael and eleven-month-old brother Donavan, were all killed.

Firefighters discovered Safyre beside her father, who had attempted to shield her from the fire with his body. Though his efforts saved his daughters life, she suffered severe burns across 75 percent of her body.

The fire was caused by arson and the case has not been solved. The Daily Gazette reported one man was convicted in November for lying to a grand jury investigation, but there has been no new lead since.

After being rescued, Safyre underwent months of surgeries.

Her aunt, Liz Dodler, took custody of Safyre and told BuzzFeed: "Safyre has had multiply [sic] operations, over 50. She had lost her right hand, three months after the fire and lost her left foot in March. She continues to have problem with her mouth due to the scar tissue tightening up. Her next operation on January 5th.

A family friend set up a YouCaring Compassionate Crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to raise $15,000 for Safyre's medical bills. As of the morning of Wednesday, December 9 the campaign has surpassed the initial goal and has reached $117,370.

Many who donated left "Merry Christmas Safyre" comments, said they were praying for her and offered several "God bless you" comments.

This year, Dodler purchased a tree to hang Christmas cards on and reported Safyre was instantly enamored. The child said, "I can't wait to fill it up," but Dodler's card rack is so large, she replied, "Honey, that's probably not gonna happen. We maybe get 10 cards a year, and the card tree holds 100."

The first card the family got was from a family member. Dodler said, "Safyre is thrilled we got our first Christmas card ... Sending out lots of Holiday cheer to ALL ... FAITH LOVE HOPE ... HAPPY HOLIDAYS."

After considering Safyre's excitement, Dodler took to Facebook and posted an image of Safyre standing beside the card tree along with the message, "I wonder how many of my friends would take the time to write and send Safyre a Merry Christmas card that she can hang on her card tree..."

Dodler included a P.O. Box address and the internet took hold of Safyre's story, which went viral.

That was when the cards started pouring in, with some purchasing small gifts for Safyre.

If you would like to send Safyre Terry a Christmas card this year, please send it to P.O. Box 6126 Schenectady, NY 12306, USA.
