LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - His newborn son, Leo, had a blanket covering his face and the hospital staff refused to let him see his baby. That's when it hit Forrest; something was wrong.

"When the doctor came out, he said 'there's a real problem with your son," Forrest stated to ABC News. He was informed that his son had Down syndrome.

Abandoning his newborn son never crossed Forrest's mind; the same can not be said for his wife.

After reuniting with his wife, she dropped a bigger bomb on Forrest. He would give up Leo or she would file for divorce.

Forrest chose his son and a week later his wife filed for divorce.

His wife refused to touch or even look at her baby for "fear of getting attached in a society where defects are not accepted, often bringing shame on the family involved," according to Forrest's GoFundMe page.

The couple lived in Armenia, where hundreds of babies are abandoned each year because of physical or intellectual disabilities. Health professionals estimate 98 percent of all Down syndrome babies born in Armenia are abandoned.

Once abandoned, the babies are placed in "squalid orphanages," where they live their entire lives, "rejected and forgotten by society," according to GoFundMe.

Forrest and Leo were no longer welcome in his wife's family home. Now a single dad, Forrest was left with little work, no money, no family and no where to live.

Forrest plans on moving Leo and himself back to New Zealand where Leo can have a better life of acceptance that he won't receive in Armenia. However, he lacked the resources.

Forrest set up a GoFundMe page asking for anything to help him reach $60,000, that he can live off of for a year, get a part-time job and be a part of Leo's life.

In just 10 days, Forrest has received an extremely generous amount of more than $325,000 from 11,500 donors.

"Thanks everyone - we are stunned beyond words at the incredible support and love you've shown for little Leo," exclaimed Forrest on his GoFundMe page. "He is a lucky guy to have the support of thousands of friends like you around the world."

He plans on using the additional funds raised to secure better living conditions in Auckland and to give Leo higher quality educational opportunities. He will use some of the money to fund facilities and programs in Armenia that support future parents in keeping their children, despite all disabilities.

Forrest and Leo will share extra funds with the only orphanage in Armenia that regularly takes Down syndrome babies.

"Thanks to your support, we can start to make a difference already," ended Forrest.
