We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this

Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Upon opening a young adult's text message today, you might find something like, "OMG, ILY LOL. WYD?"

What is that? Did they sit on their phone and send that message? There's a good chance that message makes perfect sense to the majority of kids today.

Your efforts will make a difference! Get involved now.

Younger generations have begun using acronyms within their speech, and are seemingly speaking in code. Some of these acronyms are innocent and simply mean "I love you" and "laugh out loud."

There are an ample amount of acronyms floating around today, and some of these acronyms are anything but innocent.

It is important to know some of this slang could be a signal for dangerous teenage behavior.

Did you know that "PIR" stands for parent in room or "(L)MIRL" means let's meet in real life?

"Research shows that a majority of teens believe that their parents are starting to keep tabs on their online and social media lives," explained Katie Greer, a national Internet safety expert, in an article for CNN. "With that, acronyms can be used by kids to hide certain parts of their conversations from attentive parents."

Acronyms used for this purpose could potentially be cause for alarm.

However, it is inconceivable to keep track of every possible acronym used by teenagers. In fact, new ones are being introduced everyday.

A parent can put the acronym in Google or even better, talk to their kid about it. Some of these phrases can mean something completely different to your child than the information Google provides you with.

"Asking kids not only gives you great information, but it shows that you're paying attention and sparks the conversation around their online behaviors, which is imperative," said Greer.

While it is impossible to remain sane and keep tabs on your teenager all day, everyday, it will certainly help to have a greater understanding of your teenager's secret language.

Here are 28 Internet acronyms, gathered from CNN, Greer, NoSlang.com, NetLingo.com, and coolmomtech.com's 99 acronyms and phrases that every parent should know, that will provide you with an inside look at the darker side of the teenage secret language.
