Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA (Catholic Online) - An activist judge has countermanded the will of the people in North Dakota, putting a hold on a powerful, protective law because he thought the law to be "clearly unconstitutional."
Judge Daniel Hovland wrote 22 pages on the law, in which he issued a preliminary injunction. The law would have saved the lives of children as soon as a heartbeat could be detected. Now, those children remain at risk.
Hovland wrote in his opinion, "The United States Supreme Court has unequivocally said that no state may deprive a woman of the choice to terminate her pregnancy at a point prior to viability. North Dakota House Bill 1456 is clearly unconstitutional under an unbroken stream of United States Supreme Court authority."
The ruling means the law cannot take effect until legal challenges confronting it have been resolved. Given the abject failure of the pro-life movement to win critical victories in the courts, this is unlikely.
The law is being challenged at a time when many Americans are seeing the culture of death for what it is, a morally bankrupt hazard to human life cloaked in the disguise of "rights." Despite leftist success in controlling the language of the movement, referring to the destruction of children in the womb as a "right" and as a form of "healthcare" many Americans recognize these are false, Orwellian claims.
The advent of Obamacare, and the faith-stomping provisions it contains, reveals the movement for what it really it - oppression disguised as freedom.
There is nothing free about death, punitive taxes, and dependency on chemicals and invasive medical procedures to "control" one's body. Instead, freedom comes from choosing to control one's reproduction by moral means, specifically by following a life of abstinence, monogamy, free of chemicals, perverse devices, and surgical procedures.
This freedom has been echoed in state legislatures across the nation as multiple states pass laws that genuinely protect women, both the unborn and the adults.
Unfortunately, these laws are repeatedly being blocked by judges across the nation who interpret Roe. v. Wade as a license to kill.
North Dakota has one abortion clinic, which is still one too many. Operators of the mill have expressed joy at the decision.
Unborn children we are sure, much less.
