LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "The headquarters of the Mexican Bishops' Conference has been attacked with a three cylinder explosive device," Bishop Ramon Castro of Cuernavaca stated after sharing a security camera video of the explosion, according to Catholic News Agency. "I believe this reflects the situation in Mexico."
According to conference press office director, Aramando Cavazos, investigations are active, and this is not the first instance in this area of Mexico City.
"In the early hours of the morning, around 1:50 a.m., an unknown type of explosive device was placed at the main door of the CEM building," stated Cavazos, noting the explosion caused only material damage to the door.
Following Bishop Castro's release of the frightening video showing the explosion, the "Informal Feminist Command for Anti-Authoritarian Action" group issued a statement on the internet claiming responsibility for the bomb.
The statement, posted on the international website "Contra Info," explained the bomb was made of "dynamite, LP gas and butane." The statement went on to say the attack was "for every torture and murder in the name of your God! For every child defiled by paedophiles [sic]!"
Contra Info claims to be maintained by "anarchists, anti-authoritarians and libertarians," and has reportedly posted at least seven other stories on the Feminist Command's actions throughout Mexico. However, the Associated Press has not been able to confirm the existence of the organization and Mexican authorities have not offered any public comments, according to the Catholic Herald.
Although no one was injured inside or outside of the Mexican Bishops' Conference headquarters, the situation is one that has increased a fear of persecution against the faithful.
Many priests and religious in Mexico have faced extreme violence and hate, including kidnapping and murder, in recent years.
