Parents and students fear they may lose their town's only Catholic school

Over the last 100 years, Milford Catholic Elementary School has been shaping the minds of hundreds of young children - helping them receive not only a quality education but also valuable faith-based life lessons. The fate of this beautiful school is left in the air as the School Board has proposed a permanent closure.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Milford Catholic Elementary School (MCES) is the town's only Catholic school, and parents are devastated at the proposed closure. However, due to a decline in enrollment and the other associated financial difficulties the board saw no other choice.

"As parents, we were surprised by the news, really upset about it. So we banded together, we asked for some time to come up with a viable plan," Lisa Mazzola said to Fox 25 Boston.

Their plans consist of getting more students to enroll and raising a sufficient amount of money to assist in MCES's operations. But this all needs to be done by June 16, 2017, to allow the teachers that may need to find a new job the opportunity to do so.

"If we meet our goals the school will do just fine. We've gotten amazing response. We just need to get through this hurdle together with everybody, and we got it," Linnea Beauregard said.

"The staff is amazing. They're so devoted to the kids, and they love them like family."

The closure of MCES is a part of frightening trend. There were nearly 13,000 Catholic schools throughout the United States 50-years-ago. Now, only half of them stand. In the last ten years, more than 1,000 of the schools shut their doors, according to Fox 25 Boston, and enrollment dropped by 18 percent.

The parents of MCES need to get at least 40 more students enrolled and raise $285,000. Everyone, including the families, teachers, alumni, School Board, and community, are all working together to meet their goals and save their school.

But they need more help.

A GoFundMe page for Milford Catholic Elementary School has been set up, and anyone can make a donation and spread the word to support this meaningful cause.

Pray these children don't lose their school.
