LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Is Pope Francis planning a summer surprise for Catholics? This question was the topic of discussion on Sirius XM's show "Crux of the Matter," where Catholics discuss topics of interest.

There is no evidence that Pope Francis has a surprise planned, but he is energetic and stays busy. There is nothing major on his calendar this summer, and he does not take vacations. The logical conclusion is that he will do something productive with his time and surprise everyone this coming fall.

If Pope Francis is going to do anything, it will likely be one of two possibilities, according to the radio commentators.

The first possible surprise is that Pope Francis could issue a new teaching on migrants and refugees. The refugee crisis as well as issues with immigration are a global concern. The Church teaches that we should be welcoming to the refugee, but this is also balanced against prudence and safety. What should be the Christian response?

A paper could help provide direction. Are there limits to welcoming refugees? Should Christians pay attention to the possible danger of terrorism as evil people attempt to use our mercy against us?

Another surprise could relate to the Virgin Mary. It has been speculated that Pope Francis could grant Mary a new title, Co-Redemptrix, Mediator of all Graces and Advocate. Such a title would affirm her role in the plan of salvation for all Catholics. While she does not save us, for that is Christ's work, she does advocate for us. She is a mediator and intercessor. The title would help all to remember her important role.

The show's commentators agreed it is unlikely either of these surprises will happen this summer, but both are possibilities. Pope Francis is a tireless worker, so it's reasonable to expect him to do something of note this summer. Keep your eyes and ears open!
