The one trick you need to change the world though your prayer

Here's how you can change your world!

As Christians, we are called to prayer, but we also have a lot of other things to do and as a result prayer often gets sidetracked or forgotten. Some of us only pray on Sundays, and others of us, almost never at all. Is this a problem that we should strive to solve? And how should we do it?

You should pray for at least half-an-hour every day, unless you're too busy, in which case you should pray for an hour.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -  Prayer is any conversation we have with God. It can be formal or informal. We can open with, "Our Father, who art in heaven..." or with "Hey God, here's what's up..." Like any good father, God is just happy to hear from you.

Prayer has many uses. It allows us to thank God, and to present him with our petitions. It allows God to speak into our lives. It is also important because it helps us change.

It is this use of prayer, the use of prayer to change things, that is commonly forgotten.

When we pray, we have the power to ask the God to change us. It's surprising that a lot of people never ask God to change us. We often ask for God to change the things we see about us. And when the things around us don't change, we get discouraged. We assume God hasn't heard or decided not to answer our prayers.

This is a poor assumption.

Instead, we are often asking for the wrong change. We should ask for God to change us!

You see, when we change, our perspective on the world changes. Imagine if you grew to be 10 feet tall. How different would your perspective be? Things that were once high would be seen as low. Things that you never noticed before would be everywhere.

When we ask God to change us, to give us a better view of the world through His eyes, we see the world differently. And as we see differently, we act different. When we act different, the world begins to treat us differently.

This is the trick to change with prayer. Instead of praying for the world to change, we must change ourselves. This forces the world to change in response to us!

There are many reasons and ways to pray. But prayer to change oneself is important and powerful.

When you are ready to pray, anything will do. If it perfectly fine to open an informal, respectful conversation with God. It is okay to speak to him as you would your natural father. It is also okay to use the prayers given to us by the Church.

Another way to pray is with devotional prayers, such as the Rosary or a Novena.

Catholic Online is now featuring novenas, which are nine-day devotions dedicated to special causes. Check out our novenas page by clicking here.

Whatever you decide to do, don't forget to pray, and remember that prayer is a powerful way to change the world --by changing yourself!
