LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - We turn to the Bible when we need guidance because it contains not just any truths - but God's truths.
Pope Francis spoke Sunday to remind us all "God is not a distant, an anonymous being: he is our refuge, the source of our serenity and peace.
"He is the rock of our salvation, to whom we can cling with the certainty of not falling; he is our defense against the evil that is always lurking."
The Pontiff said God is a "great friend, ally and father" but more often than not, we fail to see it.
"We don't realize that we have a friend, a father who loves us," the Pope stated. "We prefer to cling to immediate and contingent goods, forgetting, and at times refuting, the supreme good, which is the paternal love of God."
To know our Lord and to feel God as our Heavenly Father is so important "in this age of orphan-hood," His Holiness continued, adding how easily we pull away from God "when we go in obsessive pursuit of earthly goods and riches, thus showing an exaggerated love of these realities."
Pope Francis wisely compared God to our friends, saying many who appear to be our friends delude us with illusions and lies but "God never deludes."
He explained "no one can serve two masters" and should "trust in God."
When life gets difficult, we must turn to Jesus, who tells us "not to worry about tomorrow" because "there is a loving Father who never forgets his children."
Trusting in the Lord will not "magically resolve our problems," the Pontiff cautioned, but explained that faith helps us "confront them with the right spirit.
"...Christian hope is stretched to the future fulfillment of God's promise and it does not cease before difficulties, because it is founded on fidelity to God, which never fails."
Pope Francis concluded his address with a prayer that Mary would help everyone trust themselves to the "love and goodness of the heavenly Father," which he described as a "prerequisite for overcoming the torments and adversities of life, and even persecutions, as the witness of many of our brothers and sisters show us."
