LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - St. Teresa of Calcutta had a great heart for the needy and Pope Francis recommended all Christians should follow in her footsteps - particularly when it comes to innocents unable to help themselves.

"We are close to and pray together for the children who are in danger with the termination of pregnancy, as well as fr people who are at the end of their lives; every life is sacred," the Pontiff stated.

He spoke to commemorate the Day for Life celebration, which was promoted by the Italian bishops' conference. The theme? "Women and men for life in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Calcutta."

His Holiness spoke of Mother Teresa's constant call to help people and appealed for "courageous educational action in favor of human life."

Pope Francis said: "Let us remember the words of Mother Teresa: 'Life is beauty, admire it; life is life, fight for it!' both for the baby about to be born and the person who is close to death. Every life is sacred!"

Continuing the call for believers to walk the right path, the Pope took a moment to reflect on the moment Christ told the disciples they are "the salt of the earth" and "light of the world."

Christians are meant to reflect Christ's life "not in words, but by our deeds," the Pontiff explained, adding salt gives "flavor to life with the faith and love that Christ has given us."

Also, like salt, Christians should "preserve" themselves from corruption by staying far from "the polluting germs of selfishness, envy and malicious gossip."

The Pontiff himself was an excellent example of rising above the "polluting germs" by choosing to rise above the recent rash of anti-Pope flyers posted around Rome.

Many were removed or covered with signs reading "illegal posting" by the city of Rome and Pope Francis has thus far ignored them entirely, choosing instead to spend his time spreading messages of love, faith and acceptance.
