LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to Vatican Radio, Hungary's government has goals of becoming "a hub and supporter" of groups who fight against Christian persecution.

Leading advocacy groups gathered in Parliament to discuss worldwide Christian persecution and attempt to find a solution.

Hungary believes it should become a center for groups helping Christians who are at the mercy of their governments, local authorities and neighbors.

Bence Ré'tvári explained, "more Christians are being persecuted today throughout the world than during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero."

Nero was known for persecuting Christians, with many claiming he dipped them in oil and set them on fire in his garden at night so the beauty could be illuminated by their bodies.

Today, groups like ISIS have done worse to Christians, as seen in several of their propaganda videos.

Human rights activitsts believe over 100 million Christians worldwide are being persecuted, with many of them being killed, openly discriminated against - even by foreign governments - detained and abused.

Hungary is the first in the world to offer a government office specifically to help Christians suffering for their faith, particularly aimed at Middle Eastern countries.

Christian persecution continues.

Ré'tvári's ministry supervises the office and he stated: "When I travelled through Iraq I also met with numerous church leaders. Everybody asks that we don't help the Iraqis and the persecuted get into Europe. Instead we should help locals start up their lives again."

Though the situation in the Middle East remains difficult, many advocacy groups claimed Hungary should do more than just offer a hub for activist groups; it should also accept Christian refugees, even former Muslims, specifically because they face detainment, abuse and even death if they attempt to return to their home countries.

In response, Hungary admitted it has already opened talks of receiving Christian refugees. When the refugee crisis began, Hungary was one of the first countries to erect razor wire fences to keep out migrants, so the talks are moving slowly - but at least they have begun.

Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III Younan, the leader of Syria's Catholic Church, said he would welcome any and all support to local churches in Syria, as they are working to help others and are quickly exhausting their supplies.

"When in Aleppo there was no more way [sic] to get water, they did dig in the court of the churches to find a well to get water," Younan explained. "So you have to deal with the means you have."

Younan spoke with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and urged Hungary to end Western sanctions and support the rebels fighting Syria's president, Bashar Assad.

"Now for the Hungarian government, of course, regarding the situation in the European Union, they have to stop sending arms to the rebels because that would foment more violence," Younan stated. "And secondly they should also ask the United Nations to decree the lifting of sanctions because it is not morally justified because it [hurts] and harms the innocent people."

With no immediate plan to help persecuted Christians, Hungary urged international advocacy groups to create a plan of action. There has been no news yet of how the groups plan to save the Christians, who are being slaughtered each day around the world. Please pray for a solution to come to those with the power to bring about change.
