Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - All believers have faith in the Bible's words but many naysayers call for proof.
Archaeologists are constantly discovering new facts steeped in history, buried beneath layers of earth, stone and even civilizations.
So which discoveries made the top ten list last year?
In 2016, several Biblical archaeological discoveries made headlines and are worth noting but here are Catholic Online's top 10:
Pottery in London
Ancient pottery indicates Christians may have been in London earlier than currently believed (Museum of London).
Pottery fragments were excavated in the 1970s and were promptly moved to the Museum of London's Archaeological Archive, where they were forgotten for nearly four decades.
Volunteers noticed two little markings in the fragments, which combine to read "Christos," or "Christ." This discovery led researchers to better understand when Christians made an appearance in London, which was once called Londinium.
Sea of Galilee's secret village
Stone tools and jewelry were discovered at the site (PLoS One).
The Sea of Galilee is a historic site best known for Jesus' ministry.
Throughout the years, several discoveries have been made at the site but in 2016, the discovery of a 12,000-year-old village changed everything the world knew about its first farmers.
The seven species described in Deuteronomy
The seven species are often enjoyed during annual celebrations (iShop).
Ancient organic materials were discovered at the site (Israel Antiquities Authority).
The seven species mentioned in Deuteronomy were excavated from Israel's Negev Desert.
The 3,000-year-old organic items date back to King David and King Solomon's time and reveal early Edomite traditions and behaviors.
Christian symbols in Latin and Spanish messages
Ancient pottery indicates Christians may have been in London earlier than currently believed (Museum of London).
Christian inscriptions and symbols written in Latin and Spanish within a series of caves on the Caribbean island of Mona reveal what the spread of Christianity looked like.
The inscriptions revealed the colonist's attempts to convert the natives through fear and Biblical knowledge.
Evidence of a Slaughter
Historic site uncovered (Israel Antiquities Authority).
Over 3,600 Jews and Christians were slaughtered in Judea, sparking the First Jewish Revolt.
Archaeologists discovered the historic third wall and several weapons used to bombard the city.
Ancient Bible Scroll
The reconstructed Ein Gedi Scroll revealed a portion of Leviticus (Seales et al. Sci. Adv.).
In September 2016, an ancient scroll's charred remains discovered following a fire at the Dead Sea revealed a section of Leviticus.
The scroll has been in custody for years but until 2016, we did not have the technology to discover what secrets it held.
Roman Tablets
There were several "curse tablets" discovered (Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade).
The tablets were discovered in ancient Roman tombs, some of which appear to call both Christ and the Antichrist in an evil combination of magical curses.
Scientific Evidence of God's existence
Renowned scientist Michio Kaku, known for pioneering the String Theory of the universe, believes he has discovered proof of God's existence.
Speaking in scientific terms, Kaku believes all the evidence points to the universe's creation at the hands of a greater intelligence, as opposed to random forces.
