LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - St. Januarius' blood did not liquefy this December 16, ending 2016 with a bad omen.
Celebrations began early in the morning at the Royal Chapel of the Naples Cathedral with the expectation of a miracle. The Abbot of the Chapel, Monsignor Vincenzo De Gregorio stood in front of the faithful, during Mass, holding the vial of blood. He noticed the blood appeared to be a little different, but he remained confident. After all, the miracle had been documented since 1389.
When the blood did not liquefy, the Abbot asked the attendants to continue praying. In December 2015, the blood didn't liquify until well into the evening. However, by 7:15 p.m., the vial of St. Januarius' blood was returned to its shrine - still solid.
"We shouldn't think of tragedies and calamities. We are men of faith, and we must keep on praying," expressed, Abbot Vincenzo before ending the ritual, according to Church Militant.
In previous years, when the miracle of St. Januarius' blood does not occur it means evil is among us. It is a bad omen for many. According to Dormi A Napoli, the absence of the miracle has preceded 22 epidemics, 11 revolutions, three droughts, 14 archbishops death (within a 30-day period), nine dead popes (over a period of a few weeks), four wars, 19 earthquakes, and three religious persecutions.
Time-specific instances include: 1939, when WWII erupted; 1940, when Italy joined the war; 1943, Italy was occupied by Nazis; 1980, an earthquake hit South Italy.
We must ask ourselves, what tragedy will St. Januarius' blood remaining solid bring upon us? Are we going to see more devastation and death? Could this be the end? As, the Abbot advised, we must all continue praying; this is now more important than ever before.
"We give glory and praise to you O Lord for the bold witness of your Bishop, Januarius. By his selfless devotion and steadfast courage, he laid down his life rather than betray our Holy Faith. By many heavenly signs and wonders, you have shown St. Januarius to be a great defender and protector of the Church. May we imitate the fidelity and charity of your servant St. Januarius and someday share the eternal happiness of heaven with him and all your saints. Amen."
