Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The pontiff shared the crash reminded him of the 1949 Superga air crash, which killed every member of an Italian soccer team then added, "I'd like to recall today the Brazilian people's sorrow."
He then requested prayers for the victims of the "harsh tragedies."
In response to this request, Catholic Online urges our readers to unite and offer the Lord a prayer for the dead and a prayer for the victims' families.
God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.
Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for the victims of the Colombia plane crash
and for all the dead known to You alone.
In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.
Amen.
Prayer for the Mourning
Heavenly Father,
You hold our lives in the palm of your hand.
Your divine grace and never-ending mercy
blanket us in a peace not of the world.
We ask, Lord, for the strength to move forward
in this time of grief.
We speak peace to those who lost loved ones
on the tragic crash in Colombia.
Father God,
we ask for the comfort of your presence
in the face of loss.
Send the Holy Spirit to give us direction,
courage and peace.
Release us from all bitterness, guilt and regret.
In your name we say,
Amen.
O sweet mother Mary,
who knew the sadness of mourning those your heart loved most,
Jesus, your Son,
and Joseph, your devoted spouse,
pray for us in our time of loss.
Amen.
