LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - "We wish the new president well, that he may have a truly fruitful government," Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State said about Donald Trump in a radio interview.
"We pledge to pray that God enlightens him and supports him in the service of his country of course, but also in the service of well-being and peace in the world. I think today everyone needs to work to change the global situation, which is one of deep laceration and serious conflict."
Donald Trump won the presidency with the support of 52 percent of American Catholics. Trump's platform is explicitly pro-life, which gained him considerable support from Catholics. However, some Catholics found his campaign to be divisive. His rhetoric about building a wall with Mexico was even mentioned by Pope Francis who said that building walls was not particularly Christian.
Regarding the concern, Parolin answered, "On specific themes, we will see how individual choices go and on the basis of those will give a judgment." Few people believe Trump will actually attempt to construct a wall.
About 23 percent of American voters identified as Catholic.
