LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - St. Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Yugoslavia August 26, 1910.
She taught in India for 17 years before she heard the "call within a call" in 1946.
She gave her life to the Lord, who called her to care for the sick and poor of Calcutta.
She established the Missionaries of Charity, which in turn opened hospice centers for the blind, the elderly and the disabled.
Her order also established a leper colony.
Mother Teresa showed unfailing love, kindness, generosity and commitment to children, adults, the healthy, the sick, the rich and the poor.
She lived an amazing life of humility and service, earning her the Nobel Peace prize in 1979, "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace."
As the years passed, more and more people were tended to and benefited from the numerous charities, homes and medical establishments Mother Teresa opened.
As she grew older, she began to suffer several medical ails.
On September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa passed away.
Her passing sent a ripple of loss throughout the world as one of the brightest lights of our time dimmed then was gone.
Since her passing, Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope Francis and canonized a Saint on September 4 by Pope Francis.
So much more can be shared of Saint Teresa of Calcutta but these are the most basic facts of her life.
Remember St. Teresa today and thank God for his loving mercies, grace and forgiveness.
