LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Cowart is known for photographing the Passion World Tour and Britney Spears' Circus World Tour.
Since those prestigious shoots, Cowart has covered Haitians following the 2010 earthquake and created a project of the survivors' thoughts and prayers that was later on display at the United Nations.
Needless to say, he spent quite a bit of time in hotels, which led him to wonder if a hotel could offer more than just a good nights' sleep.
On his Kickstarter page, Cowart wrote: "I've traveled the world for the past decade as a photographer, and every time I stay at a hotel, I can't help but think -- what if everything in this hotel was connected to a cause or a need?
"Could a simple shift like that change the world? Imagine not just a hotel, but a global hotel chain, where every time you book a room:
- A child gets sponsored.
- The internet fee fights human trafficking.
- Every product (soap, shampoo, linens, furniture, curated art, specialty products) is purchased from partners who are making a difference
"In the lobby, a clean water well symbolizes the flow of hope and life to everyone and everything connected to the hotel.
"By choosing this hotel, you touch a hundred lives or more locally and internationally. You literally change the world in your sleep."
Cowart is so passionate about the project, he created the Kickstarter to reach a $2,000,000 goal.
The project can only be funded if the goal is reached by Friday, September 2 at 7pm PDT.
Thus far, 4,592 backers have offered $665,939 and the deadline looms.
On the project's Facebook page, Cowart wrote, "Every aspect of The Purpose Hotel will help other reclaim their dignity."
Other organizations have already signed up to offer their products at the hotel, including gum from Project 7, which uses its proceeds to help support seven areas of need such as planting trees, offering malaria treatment, education and anti-bullying.
Big-name bands such as Paramore, Imogene Heap and Dave Barnes have also shown their support for the project, which could literally change the world.
Cowart explained: "Even though it's not a Christian hotel, it certainly has a lot of core Christian values. It's all about outreach and loving our neighbor and feeding the poor. I wish a lot of churches out there would follow the hotel model.
"There are so many negative things happening in the world today. We certainly need a lot more positive, happy news. I think people want to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and this is a beautiful opportunity to do that."
