LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Two days before the anniversary of the shooting, Pope Francis announced Our Lady of Fatima "invites us once again to turn to prayer, penance, and conversion."
He spoke of Our Lady of Fatima to say: "She asks us to never offend God again. She forewarns all humanity about the necessity of abandoning oneself to God, the source of love and mercy.
"Following the example of St. John Paul II, a great devotee of Our Lady of Fatima, let us listen attentively to the Mother of God and ask for peace for the world."
Thirty-five years ago today, Pope St. John Paul II was shot in St. Peter's Square. Though he survived, some believe his attack was the revelation of the Third Secret of Fatima.
The Third Secret of Fatima, told to three children named Jacinta and Francisco Marto and Lúcia Santos, was, in part, a prophecy of a man dressed in white killed by "a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and lay people of different ranks and positions."
Though St. John Paul II survived, many believe his survival was due to the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, including St. John Paul II himself.
One of the bullets used in the attack was given to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, where it was placed in the crown of the statue of the Virgin Mary.
