LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Bishop Thomas Zhang Huaixin of Anyang, China, has died, aged 90. He will be succeeded by Coadjutator Bishop, Joseph Zhang Yinlin, 45.
Huaixin was born on May 23, 1925, and became a priest in 1950. He was swiftly targeted by the Chinese Communist Party as a political enemy and was imprisoned for six years. He suffered for his faith extensively as he faced harassment from Chinese officials throughout his career.
Despite the harassment, he did not relent from his position that only the Vatican should appoint bishops and that no member of the clergy should be forced to join the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association. The Association was formed by the government to control the Church. His steadfast resolve eventually won him an exception and he was formerly approved as bishop in 2004 without having to join.
The elderly bishop will be remembered for his courageous leadership as well as a bit of advice he often gave to fellow clerics.
According to his colleagues, Bishop Huaixin would often admonish that as long as the financial books are clear and you keep distance from women, there will be no problem with one's clerical life.
